Definition of Nursing Leadership
A great nurse leader in my mind’s eye is an amazing mentor that is committed to making a difference. The one that has a relentless energy and seems to communicate in solidarity with everyone. This leader is well liked and makes every task look easy. A leader everyone calls on for advice and help. They have the ability to empower anyone they came in contact with. Learning as a follower from some of the best transformative leaders in healthcare, I believe, I have benefited. I have always taken the lead role in one way or another from the beginning. Whether at the bedside or higher management. I have held both positions. I would title myself as a transformational leader with a vision to lead and inspire others as well. I definitely have a strong integrity and see the glass half full not half empty. The peace and power traits of effective leadership values are easily adapted and understood because I have strong values and respect and actively listen to others. These traits of peace and power bring old school values of family to the modern team and community of the organization I work. I believe in the power of positivity and seek to know and understand things. I look and encourage others to stay positive as well. I continue to seek positive change and adapt easily.
Nursing is an honorable profession that challenges us to move to greater heights and capacities every day. We have an emotional intelligence and caring background that allows us to adapt easily. There was an original call to nurse in my life and I can personally relate to the caring theories of Boykin and Schoenhofer (2001). For me, the first step was recognizing the humanness of people and how this truth affected me personally to grow in nursing. Other than Boykin and Shcoenhofer, Simone Roach’s six “C’s” of caring ae a strong sounding board for my personal practice: commitment to the profession and patients I serve, competence and continued knowledge and learning, compassion for people, confidence in my skills, a continued clear conscience and always doing what is right, and comportment or respect for self, others, and my patients.
